phonebook

Last night my assignment was to go to the Christian Team Impact show. It's one of those things where some guys (who are all former wrestlers and football players) do all kinds of "feats of strength" like: ripping phone books in half, breaking baseball bats, smashing massive cinder blocks, and exploding unopened soda cans in the palm of their hands. Regardless of my beliefs, I thought it was a rather entertaining show.

But an hour before we left the station...I wasn't so sure. I was shooting my mouth off about how it's probably really easy to just rip a phone book in half. I kept going on and on about how it was all a scam - and how I saw it on the internet. So Stephanie (the producer) said, "Let's see you do it then."

Oh no! She called me out, so I grabbed the nearest phone book, harnessed my chi, and proceeded to tear...or at least try to.

It wasn't so easy. And while I didn't actually rip the phone book in half...I still tore it up pretty good.

After I read this I Googled "how to rip a phone book in half" and you site was the second to come up. Then I found this.

"Obviously, start from the non-spine side (the open one). Slightly roll the
book so it forms a "C". Notice that the back (or front) cover now has only
a few pages layered on top of it. Start ripping from there. You will
notice that only a few pages at a time start to rip at their edge because
the edges are layered at an angle. Once you've torn all the edges getting
through the rest of the book is not that hard. Start with thinner books
like the white pages of a smaller city and work your way up as you get
practice."

I knew an anchor names Chris Goodman, he was a tiny man, did a story on this and his co-anchor surprised him on the air with a phonebook. He quickly ripped it in half.

Has anyone ever ripped it from the spine-side? I saw Chris Angel do it once. It was pretty awsome.

Chris angel the one who lifted the cab with the weights obviously in the back. At least seemed to me by the odd way the car bounced. Spine of the book I beleive had some strategicly placed slits.

Haha. This is awesome!
I am so glad you actually put up a post that admits ripping a phonebook is difficult! And I love the photo montage.
I am a professional strong woman and I rip phone books in half all the time. I get all the same crap,"There's a trick to it." & " You had the pages cut."
But sometimes a thing can be very hard- and you just work on it... It took me 4 months to get a full phonebook.

And for the record - I rip my phone books the long way. Starting at the top and going to the bottom, so there's no "cheating" with the C-method...
