Here's something I'm sure every photog can relate to: having a million empty, orphaned tape boxes lying about. Seriously, I've always somehow ended up with far more empty boxes than I have tapes.

Well, this morning when I got out to my iced-over car...I found a way to put one them to good use.

Darn. If I had thought of it a few days sooner, I could've used a few as little boxes for wrapping holiday gifts. Oh well, I'm sure I'll have plenty around this time next year.

When we had a "little" ice storm here a few weeks ago, I used one to scrape ice off the live van ladder. Then, I jammed it into the mast kill switch (which was malfunctioning due to the ice) so I could drive the beast back to the station.

I always thought I'd build a little boat out of all of mine.

Much as our water flows the other way down the drain, those of us in the Southern Hemisphere have a different problem: Not ENOUGH tape boxes! Or maybe that's just my station... I am forever walking around trying to convince people that TAPES belong in a CASE. And they wonder why the decks keep breaking down so much.

A few ago I worked with this old man editor who refused to acknowledge a beta tape unless it was in a case.

He got so angry and confused when field tapes didn't have a case.

One time he was trying to find a tape on a shelf and kept coming to ask me where it was, and I kept saying, "I told you already! It's on the Tuesday shelf." Finally, he made me go back to the tape closet and within 5 seconds I found it. And he was all, "Oh. I only read tape boxes. I don't have time to look through tapes that don't have cases."

And, I was all, "Well, you spent 25 minutes looking for a tape that you could've found if you just looked at the front label."

And then he whined, "Tapes should be in boxes!" and stormed off.

Imagine how crazy he went when everything was dropped into a server and there were no tapes. I was in his AVID bay every 10 minutes.

Long story. Sorry.

I've found that CD cases work best in the harsh Wisconsin winter mornings!

Can't wait to get my new SUV with automatic starter to defrost everything within 20 feet without stepping outside my front door :)

Robot, if you've got extras, send 'em up to Green Bay. Mine keep walking away more than the tapes do.

Naturally, I'll try to keep up by re-labeling either a tape or a case to match an orphan...and then the prodigal son tape/case returns.

I'm running out of fatted calves to kill. :-)

I found this little gem out about 3 years ago during the last major ice storm. Glad you have discovered it too.
